Prince George RCMP cleared in May 2019 IIO investigation

PRINCE GEORGE — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has determined that the Prince George RCMP did not commit an offence in relation to an incident that occurred in May 2019 involving a cyclist and an RCMP officer near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Douglass Street.

The cyclist was reported weaving in and out of traffic on his bicycle while not wearing a helmet and was stopped by an RCMP officer who attempted to ticket him and then place him under arrest for an unrelated incident that happened earlier.

The cyclist is reported to have resisted the officers attempt to arrest but was finally taken into custody with assistance from back up and taken to the Prince George RCMP Detachment where he was held overnight.

“The IIO’s CCD has reviewed the evidence – including statements from the affected person and several witnesses, medical evidence, detachment video and police records – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer has committed an offence. Accordingly, the matter will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges and the investigation is now concluded.

“This matter has been referred to the RCMP for consideration of potential issues regarding prisoner care that fall outside of the IIO’s mandate. As this process is ongoing, the IIO will not be issuing its usual public report or commenting on the matter further until that assessment is concluded,” reads a statement from the IIO.
