Sundhu to carry NDP banner in next federal election in Kamloops-Thompon-Cariboo riding

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo NDP constituency association says it knows who its candidate will be in the next federal election.

In a news release, the party says Bill Sundhu will be acclaimed at a nomination meeting on April 7.

Sundhu is a longtime lawyer and former provincial judge. He has lived in Kamloops with his family for the past 25 years.

“We are at a historic crossroads in Canada,” Sundhu said in the release. “The government policy decisions we make this year will affect us for decades. There’s so much at stake.”

“Now more than ever, we need a bold new vision and leaders in Ottawa to fight to make things better for all Canadians – a Canada where no one is left behind,” he continued.

Sundhu was the party’s candidate in 2015, finishing with 31 per cent of the vote, coming in second to incumbent Conservative Cathy McLeod who garnered 35 per cent. He did not run in the 2019 election.

There have been widespread rumours of a federal election in 2021. The Justin Trudeau-led Liberals are in a minority government situation, meaning an election would be triggered if the government falls in a confidence vote.

After four terms representing Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, McLeod has said she will not run for a fifth.
