CHILLIWACK, BC – The Prince George Spruce Kings just couldn’t find their offence against the Chilliwack Chiefs in what would be PG’s first game for the shortened BCHL Pod season in Chilliwack. The Chiefs came away with a 4-1 win.

Aaron Trotter got the start between the pipes for the Spruce Kings, while Mathieu Caron manned the crease for Chilliwack.

An odd occurrence to start the game, as Prince George started the game on the powerplay due to a warmup violation by the Chiefs.

Despite the penalty, it would be Chilliwack putting a marker up on the scoreboard first as Abram Wiebe found a snipe of a shot finding the back of the net. The goal came just 3:42 into the opening period and was Wiebe’s first BCHL goal.

Chiefs’ captain Kyle Penney gave his team some cushion before the midway mark of the first period. After a shot trickled through the five-hole of Trotter, Penney was there to tap the puck in across the goal-line to give Chilliwack a two-goal advantage

In the second period, Prince George applied the pressure in hopes of catching a break. Instead, what appeared to be a goal initially was waved off by the officials as Carter Cochrane was called for goaltender interference.

On the powerplay, Trevor Longo sent a rocket on net and zipped in past Trotter for his first of the year. The game now at 3-0 for the Chiefs.

Back to even strength, Prince George tried to keep the momentum from before the penalty, but Caron was in the zone turning away some quality scoring opportunities by the Spruce Kings.

With large part to do with Caron’s 21 saves through 40 minutes, the two teams went to their respective dressing rooms after the second period with the Chiefs carrying a 3-0 lead.

In the third period, struggling to take advantage of the first six instances they were with the man-advantage, the Spruce Kings finally found the scoring touch on the powerplay. Andrew Seaman and Christian Buono with a passing display from circle to circle, before Buono sent it back to Seaman, who then rifled the puck in past Caron to bring the Kings within two.

But that would be all the Spruce Kings could piece together offensively late in the third period as the Chiefs went on to add an empty-netter to their total, improving to a perfect 2-0 with the 4-1 win.

Caron came up big for the Chiefs, stopping 25 of the 26 shots put against him, including all 12 from a heavy shooting PG squad in the second period.

Prince George will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday, April 4th) when they take on the Merritt Centennials (0-1-0-0). Puck drop is scheduled to come at 5:00 p.m.
