PRINCE GEORGE – Some residents have logged their first black bear sighting for 2021, indicating the end of hibernation season.

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) would like to remind residents to remove bear attractants, as they don’t want a repeat of last year when approximately 45 bears were killed.

As the temperatures rise, its expected bears will wander through neighbourhoods looking for an easy food source.

When bears first emerge from hibernation, they will immediately try to fatten up. According to the CO service, last year was the highest number of bears killed in the previous five years.

The Northern Bear Awareness Society says residents should work together to make their neighbourhood safe from bears.

Any resident who fails to secure bear attractant can face a $230 fine under the Wildlife Act.
