PRINCE GEORGE – BC Health Officials reported the latest COVID-19 data on Tuesday announcing the province had added another 1,068 cases of the virus, with 43 in Northern Health.

There are 328 people who are in hospital in BC with the virus, adding 10 since Monday. 96 people are in ICU no change from Monday’s reported numbers.

There were 207 reported cases involving COVID-19 variants of concern (VoC) by Dr. Bonnie Henry on Tuesday, confirming all of the new variant cases were in Vancouver Coastal Health with the exception of one in Fraser Health.

There are 266 active cases involving VoC in BC, Dr. Henry said it takes time to detect the variants compared to regular cases, to explain fluctuations in numbers.

There are 63 people in hospital in BC who have been identified with cases involving variants of concern, about 20% of hospitalizations.

“That gives you a sense of the proportion of the people that we know have these variants of concern,” said Dr. Henry

Dr. Henry also mentioned the increase of younger people in BC needing hospitalization noting many who have been put into ICU’s, calling that “concerning.”

B117, the UK strain is expected to become the most common strain of the virus according to health officials.

“We are watching that to see the effectiveness of the vaccine with this strain, and so far we are not seeing that,” says Dr. Henry.

There are three more people who have passed away due to complications related to the virus, 1,489 people have died since the pandemic began.

Vaccinations continue to ramp up in BC, and also in Prince George as the total capacity has increased to around 400 people a day.

912,056 doses of vaccine have been administered in BC, with 87,404 being second doses.
