Set up on the doorstep of the Cougars’ goal, Josh Pillar potted the puck in a wide-open net for his fourth of the season to give Kamloops a 1-0 lead just 8:06 into the opening period.

In the second period, despite managing to turn the tide in the latter moments of the first period, the Cougars had a tough time getting their offensive established. Spending much of the back half defending their end on the penalty kill, the Cats only managed seven shots on net. However, the Blazers were unable to take advantage of a double-minor penalty committed by PG.

A tough break towards the end of the period saw Tyson Upper get battled off the puck in his own end. The Blazers dumped the puck back in deep before Daylan Kuefler notched his first of the season in front of the net on Gauthier.

From the point of their second goal, the next six minutes and 30 seconds saw Kamloops pad their point total to the point they were ahead 4-0 following markers from Inaki Baragano and Pillar, his second of the game.

14:52 into the final frame, Caedan Bankier extended the Kamloops lead to 5-0. Pillar registered an assist on the play as he pieced together a 3-point night.

Dylan Garand completed the shutout performance, having faced 16 shots. It’s Garand’s first shutout of the season. The Cougars were only able to muster up two shots on net in the third period.

On the powerplay, Kamloops scored twice on the six opportunities they had with the man advantage. They improve to 23.7 per cent on the season, launching them ahead of the Cougars for the top powerplay in the BC Division. Prince George drops to 20 per cent having not scored on either of the three chances they had against Kamloops.

The Blazers stand all by themselves atop the BC Division standings with a 7-1 record while the Cougars drop to 3-3-1-1.

Up next, the Cougars will be in Kelowna on Friday (April 16) to take on the Victoria Royals. The two teams have split the season series, however, Prince George has the point advantage with their last list going to overtime.
