Prince George’s Nico Myatovic scores twice in WHL debut

Back in February of 2020, the Seattle Thunderbirds held a press conference of their own at the CN Centre in Prince George.

The reason?

The team was announcing the signing of Nico Myatovic, a product of Prince George, ahead of their weekend tilt against the Prince George Cougars.

Jump ahead a year and a bit, and the former Cariboo Cougar was suiting up for his first game in the Western Hockey League after being called up to the Thunderbirds active squad.

Drafted in the 6th round, 119th overall, in the 2019 WHL Draft, the 16-year-old made an incredibly good first impression on his new team, tallying two goals on two shots in Tuesday’s (April 13th) game against the Tri-City Americans.

His first goal came in the opening period, nearing just 2:30 into the frame. Showing his speed to scoot around an Americans’ defender, the young forward gathered the puck before going forehand to backhand on Talyn Boyko.

In the second period, game tied 1-1, the Prince George product was back to push the Thunderbirds ahead with yet another tally coming by way of his backhand shot.

Seattle won the game 4-2 to improve their record to 7-5, sitting second in the division.
