Questions mount for future of Mackenzie with ‘broken forestry system’

MACKENZIE – Gates are closed, and jobs are lost, while two other mills operate in the distance, not far from the permanently closed Mackenzie Pulp Mill.

But those too are at risk according to Mayor of Mackenzie, Joan Atkinson.

“Our finger-joint plant that has still been running for the last year has been importing trim-ends from Alberta to keep running and to keep their employees working. I think that’s a clear illustration of how broken this entire forestry issue is in this province,” says Atkinson.

While Atkinson says she is optimistic for change, she says the damage that has been done will not change overnight. She was open in saying there are some dark days ahead, but this is not the end.

MLA for Prince George – Mackenzie Mike Morris echoed similar sentiments, admitting change was needed to avoid this long ago, but no action from the government will only make it worse for forestry-dependent communities.

“There is a number of things I understand the government is looking at right now, but everybody has signed non-disclosure agreements, so we don’t know,” says Morris.

The Premier would not take our questions on Tuesday.
