Royals bring end to Cougars winning streak

KELOWNA, BC – It was fun while it lasted as the Victoria Royals brought an end to the Prince George Cougars winning streak, as they defeated the Cats 2-1 Saturday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna.

The last loss suffered by the Cougars came to the hands of the Royals back on April 30th in overtime, going on to win the next three straight, and going six consecutive games earning points.

Saturday’s tilt marked the final time this season the two which match up against the other as the Royals got their first win in regulation this season, which each of their previous two wins coming overtime.

All three of the Royals wins have come against the Cougars.

The Cougars entered Saturday’s tilt with a 5-0-1-0 streak in their favour while the Royals had only won once in their previous 10 games.

Through the first 20 minutes, neither team found the back of the net. Prince George held the lead in the shots department, getting seven shots on net against Adam Evanoff. Victoria mustered five shots against 16-year-old Ty Young.

In the 2nd period, after the Cougars appeared to come out with the early energy, it was the Royals who drew first blood.

Down a man following a tripping call against Graeme Bryks, Brandon Cutler found his name on the scoresheet just 12 seconds into the penalty. The goal marked Cutler’s 9th of the season.

Later in the period, this time with the man-advantage, the Royals tacked on their second of the game.

Keanu Derungs let a slap shot fly from just inside the blueline to tally his 4th of the season. Tarun Fizer and Kalem Parker both assisted on the play that came at 16:23 into the middle frame.

In an attempt to claw back, the Cougars got themselves on the powerplay late in the period. With 39 seconds remaining, Connor Bowie got his 8th of the year as Tyson Upper and Jonny Hooker recorded assists.

After a scoreless opening period, the 2nd period saw three goals combined, all of which came on special teams.

Prince George upped their shot output with 12 in the 2nd period, while Victoria added seven to their total, putting the game total to 19-12 in favour of PG.

Tring to find the equalizer in the 3rd period, the Cougars couldn’t figure out a way to get one in past Evanoff as he turned away 33 of the 34 shots he faced, aiding in securing the Royals’ fourth victory of the season.

Playing in his third game in the WHL, Ty Young stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.

The Cougars will be back in action Sunday against the Kelowna Rockets back in Kamloops at the Sandman Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.

A win ensures the Cats will finish the shortened season with a winning season.
