Hatchery nets over half a million dollars in funds

PRINCE GEORGE – Over the past year, the Spruce City Wildlife Association has seen substantial improvements as over a half-million dollars was put into retro-fitting its salmon hatchery.

Over the past few years, around $600,000 was injected into the volunteer-run facility.

One of the reasons the Spruce City Wildlife Association was chosen to spawn fish is because of the commitment and proven successes of its volunteers.

The hatchery is fitted with custom commercial water chillers to micron water filters, and the improved hatchery is scheduled to brew its first salmon this year.

During the first few years of operation, the hatchery will take on 80,000 fish eggs.

According to the Director of Stock re-building program, Dustin Synder, the salmon in the Nechako River are classified as a threatened species while those in the Upper Fraser are classified as endangered.
