PRINCE GEORGE–There’s a new partnership between B.C. Wildfire services and Art Knapps to teach residents on how to better protect their homes in the event of a wildfire.

Art Knapps Plantland of Prince George now has a tagging program as part of a FireSmart program. Plants and trees now have labels on them that can let shoppers know which ones are more fire-resistant and safer to plant on their own property.

FireSmart BC has also launched their first of its kind landscaping guide for homeowners.

“It’s the first time that BC has launched its own landscaping guide and it’s really to inform British Columbians of smart choices ivegetationon and plants that will help protect their homes in the threat of a wildfire” said Amanda Reynolds, FireSmart Education Officer.

Reynolds says one of the most common mistakes people make is having conifer trees–which have cone-shaped seeds such as pine trees–on their property.

“In the event of a fire there’s just ember, hundreds of thousands of embers that’s getting thrown around. That conifer that’s right up against your house, that’s fuel. That’s what the fire is looking for.” said Reynolds.

But it’s not just about what you plant, it’s also about how you maintain your property year-round. Jos Van Hage of Art Knapps says that people need to diligent and protect their property before the season.

“The most important thing in the spring is that people start watering early..” said Van Hage.

Van Hage also recommends that if you are in an area where things are more combustible, you should plant things that can give as you much as protection as possible.

“Take lava rock, take limestone, it keeps it clean and keeps rodents away, it’s a less of a fire hazards.” said Van Hage.

The FireSmart Landscaping guide is going to be sent out to nurseries and gardening stores all across B.C.

Art Knapps is also hosting a FireSmart informational workshop on Saturday May 15th, and the public is invited to attend.
