Illicit drug supply claims 176 lives in April

VICTORIA — BC’s illicit drug supply claimed 176 lives in April, bringing the number of lives lost this year to 680.

Of those deaths, 48 were up north, including 17 in Prince George.

The April deaths are a record for the month of April and represent a 43 per cent increase over the number of deaths in April, 2020.

The BC Coroners Service says males accounted for 79 per cent of deaths this year and 70 per cent of those dying were aged 30 to 59.

The proportion of deaths of those 50 years of age and older has steadily increased over the past six years. In 2021, 39 per cent of deaths have been 50 years or older.

No deaths have been reported at supervised consumption or drug overdose prevention sites.
