PRINCE GEORGE – In new data released by the BC Ministry of Health, the vaccination rates in some communities in Northern B.C. are well below the rest of the province.

The BC CDC dashboard breaks down the percentage of those eligible who are vaccinated but does not go into detail about community specifics.

Recent data has shown the Peace region as having the lowest percentage vaccinated in the province for the past number of weeks.

Northern Health responded to the lower rates of vaccination saying they need to do more to make vaccines available for the general population, but say the goal of immunization is the same for every community.

Chief Medical Health Officer for Northern Health Dr. Jong Kim says the progress is different for various reasons, and vaccine hesitancy could be playing a role.

Local MLA’s say there’s a reason why the numbers are lower than other communities.

“As for Northern Health, I believe they need to be more flexible in the Peace Region on how vaccinations are being administered. The number one complaint that comes to my office is that getting a vaccination is not convenient, most rural people are seeding the last few months and not leaving their farms, and I would also say there is lots of confusion that took place as we have been trying to vaccinate people. A better information campaign needed to take place. I still hear that all the time in my office,” says MLA for Peace River South Mike Bernier.

BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has shared her concerns over vaccine hesitancy in Northern BC in particular.
