PRINCE GEORGE – The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation (LTFN) today announced that the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) has accepted its invitation to fly a LTFN at half-mast for 215 days in recognition of the remains of 215 children recently discovered in a mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School.

LTFN Chief and Council presented a LTFN flag to RDFFG Chair Art Kaehn and members of the RDFFG Board. LTFN Chief Dolleen Logan stated

“Our members and our nation are grateful the RDFFG has accepted our invitation to fly our flag at half-mast for the next 215 days. This will recognize and respect the 215 children who died at the Kamloops Residential School and their families. Our flag flying at half-mast at the RDFFG office will serve to remind the staff and visitors of this tragedy and what it means to indigenous people in our territory and across Canada. It will also serve as a reminder that further action is required to determine if there are any other remains of children buried at other residential schools across the country. While that work carries on we all must ask ourselves what else can we do to support our children and all children. What has happened in Kamloops must never ever happen again.”

RDFFG Chair Art Kaehn added

“There are no words that adequately capture the horror and dismay of this tragedy. We are grateful to the Lheidli T’enneh for providing us an opportunity to join with them in grieving for the children and families forever impacted by residential schools. It is one step of many we know we must take to show our support for Indigenous communities working through this and demonstrate that we are committed partners in reconciliation.”
