NANAIMO — A large police response closed off an area south of Nanaimo to discover a paintball gun was the source of the complaint.

A call of shots fired came in just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2 at a rural property off Cedar Rd., not farm from the regional landfill.

“With ultimate concern for everyone in the area, our officers shut off any access to the public and were eventually able to engage the people on the property,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said.

Officers on scene determined there were no firearms and the call of shots fired was from a paintball gun.

O’Brien said the paintball gun was being used correctly and lawfully, so no charges will be pursued.

“It’s always somewhat alarming for the public to see how we respond. Many of us are equipped with carbine rifles and our sidearms. We respond not only to protect ourselves but the public. Thank goodness the situation was resolved about an hour later.”
