Canada day celebrations up for debate

Jun 14, 2021 | 6:02 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – As communities are still reeling from the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children at a former Kamloops residential school, some say that Canada Day celebrations are not appropriate at this time.

Victoria City Council unanimously voted to cancel their virtual Canada Day broadcast, and Chief Dolleen Logan of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation agrees.

“I agree with them, It shouldn’t exist – it should be Aboriginal day. Canada is 172 years old, that is three generations from me.” Said Logan.

There is no word yet on whether Prince George will be canceling Canada Day festivities if any plans have already been made.

However, some are hesitant to cancel Canada day celebrations including the Premier. He says that National Indigenous Peoples Day would be a more appropriate day to focus on the current events.

“The intent I understand. I think it is appropriate that we all reflect on the events in the Tk’emlups territory – but I know that all Canadians want to put COVID behind us and the symbolism of reaching July first is I think where most people’s heads are at right now.” Said Premier John Horgan at a press conference.

Back in Victoria, the City will now be producing a broadcast guided by the Lekwungen people later this summer. It will feature local artists and will explore what it means to be Canadian, in light of recent events.

“As First Nations mourn and in light of the challenging moment we are in as a Canadian nation – Council has decided to take the time to explore new possibilities, instead of the previously planned virtual Canada Day broadcast.” Said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps in a statement.
