PRINCE GEORGE – Before making that “Too good to be true” purchase on a social marketplace.

Police recommend checking if the property item is part of a police investigation by accessing the Canadian Police Information Centre database available to the public.

If the item is reported to the police as stolen and the serial number was provided, the item will be flagged in the database as stolen property.

That alone could prevent you from having stolen property. Police forces across the nation use CPIC to record information on stolen property.

Mounties encourage residents to record the serial numbers of their property like bikes, ATVs, and other toys in case the items do get stolen.

If your property does not have a serial number, there are other ways to make it identifiable. Engraving a sign or a number on it is recommended.

Police recommend etching your driver’s licence number and not your social insurance number.

Before making that social marketplace purchase, you can access the police database by searching online C.P.I.C
