Indigenous outdoor learning space opens at École Lac Des Bois

PRINCE GEORGE – A new outdoor learning space at École Lac Des Bois Elementary was ready just in time to be opened on National Indigenous Peoples Day according to staff.

The indigenous space is culturally significant for many reasons including how it is shaped, a similar design to what would be seen inside a traditional pit house.

The wood benches, stools, and tables were made custom for the school and funded in part by a Northern Health grant.

“There’s a real trend in BC education to get outdoor learning spaces, for us we’ve decided this is a connecting space but also a learning space and the intention is to bring our children outside,” says Stephanie Coates, Vice-Principal of Lac Des Bois.

The space is not the first of its kind in School District 57 but is part of a network of outdoor learning spaces popping up at schools across the area.

Several Grade Four and Five students were on hand to open the space.

Students sung and danced to traditional songs, as part of the ceremony on school grounds.
