PRINCE GEORGE – Vaccination rates in Northern Health have been released in detail for areas in and around Prince George.

Data as of June 22 shows rates of the population with one dose of a vaccine are below the provincial average in some areas:

  • Prince George – City North – 69%
  • Prince George – City Central – 67%
  • Prince George – City Southwest – 76%
  • Prince George – Southwest Rural – 60%
  • Prince George – North Fraser Rural – 60%
  • McBride/ Valemount – 74%
  • Mackenzie – 66%

Previously reported in the Peace region of the province, access to the vaccine has been a significant issue, with elected officials pleading for drive-thru and pop-up clinics.

Northern Health, the BC CDC, and the province teamed up to provide those clinics, although none of which have been provided to residents in rural areas like Bear Lake, Hixon, Red Rock, and others.

McBride, Valemount, and Mackenzie have received whole community-type clinic events similar to the Prince Rupert approach.

While vaccine hesitancy could be playing a role, it is important to note that access to the vaccine could also pose a significant barrier to explain the lower percentage rates.
