PRINCE GEORGE – It is going to be one scorcher of a weekend and no doubt a lot of people will be heading towards the water to cool down. With that, there are many safety risks that swimmers and boaters should be aware of.

“We’ll be seeing some high elevation snow and glacier melts which will have rivers flowing faster. Keep in mind, if you are looking to jump into a lake or river the water will be moving pretty fast,” said Meteorologist from Environment Canada Bobby Sekhon.

This time of year, water temperatures are also much cooler than outside temperatures which can be dangerous.

“It is 30 degrees outside but the water may only be five to six degrees. When you have been drinking, you are putting yourself at risk because your body goes into this shock state and then your limbs won’t work,” said Manager, of Search and Rescue, Dave Merritt.

This year already, search and rescue have responded to a large number of water emergency-related calls.

“To date, we have run around 480 calls. 65 of those were water calls, people drowning, flipping boats in rivers or not wearing proper PPE. Think about what you are doing, go and enjoy it but do it smartly in a way that you are going to come home afterwards,” continued Merritt.

There is a heat warning in effect for Prince George and if you are planning to spend some time outside this weekend remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and proper clothing, and also watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
