Evacuation Alert for Deka Lake as a series of wildfires break out in Cariboo

KAMLOOPS – A lightning storm is to blame for more than a dozen wildfires that broke out late Wednesday evening through the Cariboo region, leading to an Evacuation Alert for residents of Deka Lake.
According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) more than a dozen wildfires are burning in an area just east of Highway 97 in an area known for it’s lakes and cabins. Nearly all of them have been attributed to lightning strikes.
The Cariboo Regional District issued an Evacuation Alert for the Deka Lake area at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. It’s not clear how many properties are affected but the number is in the dozens.
An Evacuation Alert is a warning to residents to be prepared to leave their property at a moments notice. Residents should have a a plan to transport all family members or co-workers outside of the area of danger. Essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers, should be available for a quick departure. Keepsakes such as photographs should be ready to move quickly. This is also the time to move pets and livestock to a safe area.
