Premier addresses wildfire situation in B.C.

PRINCE GEORGE – Premier John Horgan addressed the media about the increasing number of wildfires in the province.

“Our primary concern is always to protect lives,” said Premier John Horgan after sharing his concerns, condolences, and appreciation for the people of Lytton, B.C.

The Premier also thanked people for providing shelter, and assistance to those who have had to flee due to the fires.

Several reports claimed that sparks from a train caused the fire that burned nearly all of Lytton, the Premier did respond, but deferred to the investigation on the ground.

“We have professionals on the ground doing their investigations, and when we have information we will share that with you,” said Horgan.

Horgan said information would be provided as soon as possible as for the number of missing people who remain unaccounted for.

Details on possible injuries or fatalities could not be provided during the press conference on Wednesday.

If you have family or individuals whom you have not heard from you are asked to contact police.

The fire near Lytton is at least 9,000 hectares according to the BC Wildfire Service, a spokesperson said “this is going to be a long haul.”

MP for the area Brad Vis says 90% of the community has been burned, BCWS said they could not give exact numbers as thorough evaluations of the status of structures is completed.
