Flood warning remains in effect for the Robson Valley

MCBRIDE — A flood warning remains in effect for the Upper Fraser River.

The BC River Forecast Centre says that includes the Robson Valley and areas upstream to Torpy, Dome Creek, Dore River, McBride and surrounding tributaries.

The Fraser River at McBride is very slowly receding with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development saying that the river may have surpassed the all-time highest recorded flow set in June 1972.

“Flows are expected to recede over the upcoming days unless moderate to heavy precipitation occurs,” says the ministry. “The public is advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.”

The Village of McBride says flooding has already closed Raven Road, leading to Gaglardi Park and the boat launch and Horseshoe Lake Road close to the boardwalk.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) says if you live near a river or stream, take steps to prepare an emergency plan in the event rising waters threaten your home or access to your home.

Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit if you don’t already have one and make a plan for any pets or livestock.

If needed, the RDFFG says sand and sandbags are located at:

  • Robson Valley Recreation Centre, 441 Columbia Street, McBride
  • Canoe Valley Recreation Centre, 100 Elm Street, Valemount
  • Lakes District Maintenance Tete Jaune Yard, 13410 Blackman Road, Tete Jaune

If high water is threatening your primary residence and you need support, you are asked to call the Regional District 24 hour emergency line at 1-800-667-1959.
