What you need to know before heading to a dog park

PRINCE GEORGE – As the weather gets nicer, you and your pup may be spending more time at the dog park. BC SPCA AnimalKind accredited Trainer, Vanessa Charbonneau, shared some tips that you need to know before you go.

“Dog parks aren’t the best place for young puppies. Their immune systems are nieve and they are at more risk for disease and they are socially more sensitive, so dog parks can be very overwhelming at that age,” said Charbonneau.

In normal dog play, there is biting, growling, flashing of teeth, and rolling around. However, if a dog fight does occur there are safe ways to break one up.

“Avoid getting your hands in their faces, or reaching for collars. Instead, reach around the flank area and wheelbarrow the dog out of the interaction. This action will save you from re-directed bites or other injuries,” said Charbonneau.

With the high temperatures, owners also need to monitor their pups closely as dogs don’t know when they need a break.

“Keep park breaks nice and short when it is hot out. Lots of breaks and lots of water,” continued Charbonneau.
