Seal coat concerns

Blackwater Road residents frustrated with road fix

PRINCE GEORGE – Some residents who live along the Blackwater road west of town are frustrated with the method chosen to repair the heavily used road.

In less than a week, four vehicles have suffered broken windows and rock damage.

According to those who live along the road, the seal coating work began late last week, and the material used on the road became a safety concern.

The concerned residents would like to see more signs along the road to slow traffic as the material used is damaging vehicles.

We reached out to the ministry of transportation and infrastructure on the road conditions and didn’t hear back by our deadline.

In response to our request, the province supplied this statement:

Sealcoating is a common treatment to preserve pavement surfaces, not only on our side roads but on our major highways and secondary highways in the North and Southern Interior Regions that are prone to damage from freeze/thaw conditions.

The treatment can often extend the pavement life by up to 10 years.

Anyone who has experienced damage to their vehicle is asked to start a claim by calling 250-387-7609, or visit: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/licensing-and-insurance/highway-claims
