PRINCE GEORGE – The ol’ ball game return to Citizen Field in Prince George for a three-game series between the Prince George U18 Knights and the Kamloops Riverdogs.

The first of three games was held Tuesday evening at the ballpark, drawing a crowd of an estimated 350 spectators. The crowd was a welcomed addition to the experience for the Knights as they returned to competitive play, this marking the first time they were taking on a Triple-A opponent since making the jump this season.

“Team performance was definitely a reflection on the crowd. Everybody here, last night was paced with 350 people. A lot of the boys were psyched up for that and I think that helped the performance,” said James Yandeau.

The Knights had won four consecutive Double-A Provincial Championships with their last coming in 2019. The step to Triple-A was supposed to come last year, but COVID delayed that for the Knights.

This marked the first few meaningful games for the Knights in nearly two years. Through three games, it was the Knights coming out on top with a 2-1 series win.

In Game 1, the Knights pulled away and managed to walk away with a 4-2 win Tuesday evening. In Wednesday morning’s tilt, the Riverdogs turned the tied, blanking the Knights in a 4-0 performance. Proving to be evenly matched through two, the Knights snuck by in Game 3 with Dillon Neufeld’s walk-off hit to bring in the scoring run, a 5-4 victory.

“It was a bit of a struggle at the start of the series, I was just getting my feet under me. But it felt good to get a piece of one and give the boys a win,” said Neufeld.

While the Knights are just getting their season underway, the Riverdogs have been road warriors this season with games throughout the Okanagan.

“I think it was a great experience. The atmosphere, especially last night (Tuesday), I think Prince George did a fantastic job. I think it put some added pressure on our guys and gave them a chance to compete and grow as players. I think it was a great experience overall,” said Isiah McDonald, Assistant Coach for the Riverdogs.

The Knights will now look to ride some of this momentum down to Kelowna this Friday where they’ll be playing several teams from the area as they look to introduce themselves to the Triple-A ranks in BC.
