The Pepper Tree Hair Studio: Amplify Prince George

The Pepper Tree Hair Studio is a salon that has been part of the Prince George community for over 40 years.

With a team that has dedicated itself to helping make the community better, Pepper Tree has supported many initiatives & causes: both local & abroad. They have also been vocal supporters of reconciliation & Indigenous causes in the North.

When the hair studio renovated in 2018, approximately $15,000 in equipment & products were donated to Harmony House, an organization that works to provide supportive housing for pregnant women or new mothers struggling with mental health and/or problematic substance use.

Later that year, Pepper Tree worked to send cases of their First Nations flip-flops to India when they were made aware of the need in communities abroad.

Owner Shannon Wright also tells of the studio’s support for her home community of Gitanmaax, where they regularly partner with Park Avenue Apparel to provide clothes & grad dresses to those in the Gitanmaax community with no strings attached.

For Pepper Tree’s annual client appreciation day in the fall, proceeds are always donated to a cause. Past initiatives to receive support from the hair studio include the Salvation Army, Elizabeth Fry Society, Saint Vincent De Paul, and the Ramona Lisa Wilson annual walk, in addition to frequent donations to the Nusdeh Yoh Children.

Most recently, the Pepper Tree Hair Studio team were huge supporters of the Orange Shirt Society, and the Indigenous Day gathering at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

Shannon states “Residential School Awareness is dear to my heart, as my father was forced into a residential school along with his siblings, countless family members, and friends. I am grateful for the opportunity to create a dialogue and make a difference for the betterment of my people, daughter, and future generations. This is not a dark chapter of Canada’s history – this happened to my dad, and he just turned 65″.

The Pepper Tree Hair Studio donated 100% of the proceeds from their “Every Child Matters” shirts to the Orange Shirt Society and the Residential School Awareness initiative.

As a business on Lheidli T’enneh territory, Pepper Tree offers a 10% honorary discount to all Lheidli T’enneh members as a thank you for the privilege of residing on the un-ceded territory.

The Pepper Tree Hair studio hopes to continue to provide platform and dialogue opportunities to showcase the Indigenous culture & heritage of our community.
