PRINCE GEORGE – For the second year in a row, the Jehovah’s Witnesses has opted to hold a virtual convention.

“The biggest motivation to go with a virtual convention again this year is safety, right? And being so conscious about being in large groups. And looking at things from a global perspective,” explains Max Correia, a spokesman with Jehovah’s Witness Canada.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have a long tradition of holding conventions in Prince George, dating back to 1964. In fact, since the first large gathering 57 years ago, 44 conventions have been held in the city, with an aggregate total attendance of 121,967. Traveling to, and staying in Prince George for these conventions was a highlight for delegates from across Northern BC. Each year, more than two thousand convention goers descend on the city for three days, staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. According to the Manager of Economic Development for the City, Mellissa Barcellos, the loss of that event is a major loss.

“That will have a big economic impact in Prince George because those people who travel here and spend one, two, multiple nights in the city,” says Barcellos. “They need to eat, they entertainment. Lots of times, conferences rent convention space. And all of that spending won’t happen in Prince George.”

However, events are starting to return. According to Tourism Prince George, a number of events are set for later this year and into next year:

– Rooftop Rock – August 2021

– Northern Fancon – September 2021

– Sinner and Saints Concert – November 2021

– Coldsnap – January 2022

– World Women’s Curling Championships – March 2022

– BC Summer Games – July 2022

– Canadian Native Fastball Championships – August 2022

– Caribou Rocks the North – August 2022

So will Jehovah’s Witness convention be making a return?

“Prince George has truly been wonderful to us. It’s a central location, the community has been hospitable to us and very welcoming. We’ve loved it there. So will we be coming back? Let’s hope so.”
