Timberwolves legend Marcus MacKay named Coordinator of Athletics and Recreation

MacKay points to his career as a Timberwolves student-athlete as providing a unique perspective and understanding of the day-to-day expectations around a university athletics department.

“My experience as a TWolf is why I desperately wanted this position, I loved being a student-athlete and I love being around other student-athletes. We have such a tight-knit culture at UNBC which makes it easy to want to stay involved with our program. I want to treat our athletes how I was treated, and I’m going to work as hard as possible to deliver on that.”

The TWolves received resumes and applications from candidates across the country, before deciding MacKay was the right fit.

UNBC Director of Athletics, Loralyn Murdoch is thrilled to add an individual with years of experience in the Timberwolves family, and the dedication to grow and learn in the position.

“Marcus joins the Timberwolf family with a lot of knowledge from the student-athlete perspective while also having opportunities to work for the Athletics department and NSC in varying capacities.”

“I’ve known him and his sports-orientated family since he was a small boy playing minor basketball in Terrace and have watched him grow into an outstanding young man with a lot of potential as he begins his professional career,” said Murdoch.

“We look forward to mentoring Marcus and allowing him to grow the position to suit his strengths while continuing to keep the bar at the highest standard.”

MacKay had a tremendous career in green and gold, concluding his UNBC time sitting top-five in TWolves’ Canada West history in points, assists, steals, and first in three-pointers.

In his new position, he will handle coordinator duties of Timberwolves gameday operations, as well as on-campus recreations, such as intramurals.

The Timberwolves will resume Canada West conference play in September.

I’m hoping I can bring a good perspective on what our athletes’ needs and wants are, utilizing my experience of being a student and student-athlete for five years,” said MacKay.

“I’m super grateful that Loralyn and her staff gave me this opportunity. My time as an athlete was amazing but I’m even happier that I get to stay a part of the athletics family now and in the future.”
