Local artists supporting tattoo shop destroyed by fire

PRINCE GEORGE – The community has joined forces to help support the artists who lost everything when their tattoo studio burned down.

“We are pretty lucky considering that we have a community around us that has supported us in such amazing ways. Opening their shops to us and fundraising,” said Handsome Cabin Boy Tattoo Artist, Katie Zammit.

On July 20, 2021, the Handsome Cabin Boy Tattoo shop was engulfed in flames. The fire is still under investigation but is considered suspicious. The damage left behind is estimated at $200,000.

“We just want to get back on the horse and look forward to re-building a space for us to work in,” added Zammit.

Within hours of the fire, a GOFundMe page was set up and as of Friday afternoon over $20,000 had been donated.

“The outcome of those funds – will go towards all five of [the Handsom Cabin Boy Tattoo artists] to rebuild, and start over,” said Zammit.

Since then, other tattoo artists have bound behind the crew, like those at Gold Tooth Grin Studios.

“I think it important to have the whole tattoo community come together. I know when businesses lose their livelihood, it’s a lot harder for a small business to re-coop. I am a small business owner myself, I would hope someone would do the same for me,” said Gold Tooth Grin Studios Owner, Steve Smoch.

The studio has also opened its doors to the displaced artists for them to continue their work until they rebuild.

“It’s been great having them here, a little cozy, but we are going to get them back on their feet,” added Smoch.

Gold Tooth Grin Studios is hosting a flash day called ‘Stabbin For the Cabin’s Crew’ on Monday starting at 10:00 AM. People will be able to choose from pre-drawn designs starting at around $80.

“We will have people come in, about five at a time, chose a pre-drawn flash design from any of the artists here, get them to fill out some paperwork, then we will give them a call. We will be tattooing all day, and 100% of the proceeds are going to go towards helping the Handsome Cabin Boy crew get back on their feet,” continued Smoch.

There’s no timeline for when the Handsome Cabin Boy Tattoo team will rebuild.
