Active landslide near Valemount, evacuation alert in effect

VALEMOUNT — Residents are being advised of an active landslide approximately three kilometers upstream of Swift Creek from the Village of Valemount northerly boundary.

The Village of Valemount and the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George established a joint Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and is advising the public to avoid the area.

An evacuation alert is in effect for all properties on the northeast side of Main Street beginning at William Road, and extending beyond the Swift Creek bridge to the end of Main Street in Electoral Area H of the Regional District.

Conditions may unexpectedly change and make it necessary for the Village of Valemount and Regional District of Fraser-Fort George to require immediate evacuation to ensure the personal safety of our residents and frontline responders.

Residents are asked to prepare by:

  • make arrangements for pets and livestock to be moved to safe locations
  • move equipment and farm implements to higher ground
  • gather important papers in water-tight containers and move valuables to alternate locations
  • prepare a 72-hour personal survival kit for you and your family
