Prince George’s Jared Young embracing opportunity with Triple-A Iowa Cubs

PRINCE GEORGE – After getting off the bus in Knoxville, Tennessee at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, 26-year-old Jared Young was pulled into the manager’s office in the Tennessee Smokies Clubhouse.

The Smokies had just returned back from a road trip to Montgomery, Alabama.

“The manager was like ‘hey come into my office, I thought oh here we go,” explained Young on how he didn’t know what to expect from the conversation. “Normally you just get off the bus and try to go straight home.

Instead, Young’s manager informed him he was getting the call up to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, just one stop away from MLB’s Chicago Cubs, the team that drafted Young back in 2017.

“Obviously I was pretty pumped but then I had to get all of my stuff packed up and get on a flight the next morning. I got here kind of late on Monday and we had a game last night so it was a little bit of a whirlwind.”

Young was drafted in the 15th round, 456th overall by Chicago and has spent the better part of his professional career in Knoxville with the Smokies.

In 144 plate appearances with the Smokies this season, the left-bat had registered 67 total bases and 16 extra-base hits. He also scored 27 runs and has a 3-26 batting average prior to getting called up. He admits the game is starting to slow down for him and has greatly improved his mental game.

Young does believe making the jump from Double-A to Triple-A will be an adjustment for him, but he says he’s confident in his ability to make that adjustment as he continues to put in the work in hopes of one day playing in the big show.

“Obviously I don’t want to be in the minor leagues, nobody does.,” said Young. But the more you think about that the worse you’re going to do. You have to keep your emotions in check and play for the team that you’re on, not for the team you want to be on and good things will happen.”

Young, after pinch-hitting for the Cubs on Tuesday, was listed in the starting lineup for Iowa as the designated hitter ahead of their Wednesday game against the Omaha Storm Chasers.
