PRINCE GEORGE – In an effort to address community health and wellness in terms of homelessness, mental health, and addiction, the City will receive just shy of $2 million under the Strengthening Communities program. But these are issues the City is very familiar with and has been addressing for the past two years.

“It was the recommendation of the Select Committee that we establish a Community Safety Hub to enhance that community coordination and integration,” says Chris Bone, Manager of Social Development. “In addition to that, a lot of the activities and initiatives that we receive funding for from the grant source were discussed in the context of the Select Committee.”

The Community Safety hub will get some attention, but funding will be allocated to other programs such as:

· Increased RCMP patrols

· Security (civic facilities and parkades)

· Establishment of a Mini Transfer Station (to assist Parks and Bylaw staff to deposit and sort daily cleanups)

· Enhanced cleaning

· Service/Drop-In Centre for unsheltered homeless population and comprehensive evaluation

“The City will be hiring two, one-year term Outreach Coordinators to work alongside Bylaw Services so our Bylaw Services Officers can focus on their job duties,’ says Bone.

The funds will be administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and its president says he is pleased to see the broad range of communities to get funding, large and small.

“Homelessness and mental health is not centered in urban areas. It’s throughout our entire province,” says Brian Frenkel. “So when I see the announcement of who the successful applicants are, I’m pleased to see that it’s throughout British Columbia.”

Some of the targetted initiatives will take time, such as the outreach coordinators, while others can be implemented quickly.
