Young Cats get introduced to Prince George ahead of Cougars Training Camp

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Cougars welcomed the next batch of young cats to the city as the hockey club looks to open up training camp on Thursday (Sept. 9).

The group of rookies coming in for camp were treated to a tour of the city inside the team’s charter bus and included a stop at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. The group, mainly those from the 2020 WHL Draft, and their parents were walked through topics such as education, billets, and volunteer opportunities.

For players like Riley Heidt, while he spent a brief time in Prince George ahead of the WHL’s BC Division Hubcentre in Kamloops and Kelowna, this was his first opportunity to see the city and get familiar with some of its amenities.

While Heidt was drafted 2nd overall in the 2020 draft and played last season as a 15-year-old, the Cougars selected two others in the first round. However, due to WHL rules that only permit one 15-year-old on an active roster, the Cougars were unable to bring their 17th overall selection in Caden Brown and 22nd overall pick in Ryker Singer.

This marked their first time in Prince George as they look ahead to their first Major Junior hockey training camp.

The Cougars open training camp Thursday afternoon with the Prospect Showcase Game happening later in the evening at 6:00 p.m. inside the CN Centre. The Cougars will have their Intrasquad Game on Monday, September 13th, which will conclude training camp before hitting the ice Wednesday at home against the Kamloops Blazers.
