Adeana Young

Candidate Questions: Adeana Young – Skeena-Bulkley Valley

Sep 10, 2021 | 8:27 AM

Why are you running for office?

Because “Status Quo Must Go” This is a pivotal point in time and we need change. We are on the brink of a major economic downturn that can only get worse as our natural resources are depleted. People, businesses, the environment, all are suffering. We have a “chop it down, ship it out” attitude. We have to start doing what’s best for us instead of what’s cheapest for corporations. Working together, regardless of political leaning, Greens will do what’s best for us in the long run. On September 20th your vote will be cast and it’s at that time, change will happen. Your support for Adeana for Skeena will go down in history as a monumental time for our climate and people crisis we are navigating today. Go to adeanayoung.ca for more information about myself and my motives.

How does your party plan to address the issue of climate change?

Right off the bat I will say the Green Party do not operate with “backroom” decisions. The Green Party do not have whipped votes therefor it’s not a party plan per se. It will be up to us within the riding to make the message loud and clear in the House of Commons. As a Green Party representative, it is my responsibility to ensure our voices are amplified. Whichever way the Party decides I do NOT have to agree or vote in favor if the decision doesn’t accommodate our riding.

A prosperous, modern society needs lots of energy and a healthy environment. Fossil fuels can no longer deliver both. A detailed plan with no one left behind can’t be made until the people who are affected create the plan. The oil and gas workers, the industry, government, First Nations, energy consumers, everybody. We know what the goals are, and we can set the process in motion. We have to build the plan from the bottom up. That’s how the Green Party works.

How would you address the challenges facing some Aboriginal communities across our region?

As an indigenous woman all I’ve ever wanted was to be heard. I would make the time and create the space to listen to the community concerns, needs and successes. Indian Reserves were not our original way of life yet some of us have learned to benefit from that system. The Truth and Reconciliation 94 calls to action is also a good start to addressing challenges. Being a critic in the Shadow Cabinet with the Reconciliation and Indigenous Affairs portfolio is going to be crucial in addressing concerns.

What’s your stance on the development of pipelines?

Transitioning away from what is already existing is going to take time and collaboration. Abundant reliable energy in the form of fossil fuel has simplified today’s civilization. But overuse of fossil fuels is unacceptable. We’re getting to the time that our transition is no longer going to be voluntary. We can begin the transition while it is manageable or we can wait until things become catastrophic and we turn to ‘survival mode’ where we then are reactionary rather than preventative.

How high a priority is affordable child care for your party? What’s your party’s pitch?

Because the Green Party are a grass roots party, the pitch will have to come from the constituents. As a mother of 4 I would say affordable childcare is a priority for me. In the world of politics every topic is just as meaningful and important to each individual as the next. What I really want are for individuals to use their voices to help shape what will work for them in our riding.

What’s your party’s stance on vaccinations? Should they be mandatory?

On August 18th Annamie Paul made a press release in regard to mandatory vaccinations Here is the link and I will choose to stand behind her statement at this time. https://www.greenparty.ca/en/statement/2021-08-18/green-party-statement-vaccination

What would you do to help seniors?

We’re all going to be seniors someday. The way we treat seniors is the way we ourselves will be treated tomorrow. Not all seniors need help, but those that do, need it the most. With everyone at the table, we’ll get the best solutions available. That’s the Green Party way. Otherwise, we sit and wait for Ottawa to tell us how to spend the money they’ll “proudly” announce.

How would you address the opioid crisis?

We need to take preventative measures. Like almost all of the problems that face society today, it is systemic. Substance abuse is a human reaction to trauma. A holistic approach is multi-faceted and will require much needed action on conversations that have begun around the opioid crisis. Taking action means allocating resources to take preventative measures, support, and advance programs that are required to address the issues at hand.

Where do you live in the riding? Why? What are your favorite places to spend time in?

Loyal to the soil on Haida Gwaii <3

Who’s your favorite singer/band?

I listen to pop music
