Candidate Questions: Phil Hewkin – Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies
Why are you running for office?
I am running for public office this federal election because I am very concerned the direction Canada has taken of late. I believe that Direct Democracy, where every Canadian gets to VOTE on EVERY issue that effects their lives. Including the ability to post questions to be voted upon by every voter in the riding who cares to. That vote would extend to M.P. recall, taxation, every thing Federal government encompasses. I am tied of being treated as a child by Federal politicians. I do not like the top-down dictates as decreed by the party leaders.
How does your party plan to address the issue of climate change?
Climate change is an issue that can never be addressed by paying Carbon Tax to Federal parties who spend like drunken sailors. We in B.C. Have been paying this Carbon Tax for FOURTEEN years. Emissions have in fact increased. PLEASE.
Allow me to report the facts. To the East of Prince George B.C., Tumbler Ridge was formed as a coal mining company town.
For 32 years, Coal was mined at Quintette/Bullmoose locations until those were depleted.
Now coal is mined in Willow Creek and Brule Mine Which are in the Chetwind B.C. area.
That coal is shipped overland by RAIL to the west coast of B.C., Where it is loaded onto massive Ocean Freighter ships destined for China. Tens of thousands of rail cars rumble through Prince George B.C. Every month and have done so for about 40 years.
China refuses to invest in clean burn tech for their coal fuelled industry. This would hurt China’s bottom line.
I would encourage any doubters to simply look into those rail cars to see what is headed west.
The Government of Canada receives resource revenues from the extraction, production, and export of all in/ from Canada.
They have, I understand, received over 5 billion in revenues from coal export.
Please keep in mind that these same people tell all of us that WE must pay a carbon tax, because of our energy consumption.
They tell us that our CARBON FOOTPRINT is too big.
-And so I ask you. How big is the carbon footprint for mining coal, shipping overland, and freight overseas to China?
I understand that ONE of these trips. Exceeds. All emissions combined. From all Canadians, for an entire year.
I do not oppose coal exports. Just please do not lie to me, and tell me, that I must feel guilty, and pay an exorbitant Carbon Tax. I would like VERY MUCH for all informed Canadians to be able to VOTE on important issues like this.
It seems obvious to me that any/all politicians who endorse carbon tax do not give a whit about emissions, climate, or the environment. The only truly GREEN object of their desire is that which can be extracted from Canadian’s wallets.
