Sexual violence prevention campaign launches in post-secondary schools

PRINCE GEORGE – The B.C. government has relaunched a campaign called “…. is not yes” to increase awareness about sexual violence prevention and available supports for post-secondary students.

“Sexual violence has no place on our campuses, understanding consent is one of the first steps to preventing sexual violence because only ‘yes’ means ‘yes’. The messages about sex, consent, and sexual violence in this campaign are direct because students have told us loud and clear that we need to meet them in a thought-provoking and direct way,” said Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training, Anne Kang.

The campaign is being run at all 25 B.C. post-secondary schools including UNBC and CNC here in Prince George.

“For campuses our size, having the government’s support and their ability to create some of the marketing materials and education [on this], is very helpful,” said Vice President of Student Affairs at CNC, Shelley Carter-Rose.

With students returning to campus, after nearly a year, the government felt it was crucial to relaunch the campaign as close to two-thirds of sexual assaults on campus occur in the first few weeks of school.

“Sexual assault has continued to be on the rise over the past years. With young women disproportionately impacted, it made up 50% of all police-reported sexual assaults. We are working to make sure that campus is a safe place for all students, where they can focus on their studies free of harassment and sexualized violence,” said B.C. Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, Grace Lore.

The campaign not only brings awareness to what consent is to keep students safe but also provides support for sexual assault survivors.

Shareable campaign material will be given out to all post-secondary schools, the campaign will also run throughout social media. The material is being delivered in Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, and English as well.
