PRINCE GEORGE – Monday brought a conclusion to the five-days of training camp for the Prince George Cougars, which was capped with the playing of the club’s Rob Charney Cup between Team Brewer and Team Hamhuis.

Team Brewer ended up being the squad that hoisted the trophy at the end of regulation with a 6-2 win over Team Hamhuis. The Rob Charney Cup is named after former Manitoba-based scout, Rob Charney who passed away from cancer in 2013.

2020 2nd overall selection, Riley Heidt, got the scoring underway late in the opening period as Jonny Hooker fought off a hook. The over-age forward slid the puck across the crease to the blade of Heidt. The goal gave Team Brewer a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

In the second period, Kyren Gronick doubled Team Brewer’s lead as he pounced on a rebound from goalie Tyler Brennan. Koehn Ziemmer capped off the scoring spree when he made it 3-0 two and half minutes into the frame. Gavin Schmidt made it 4-0 Team Brewer through 40-minutes.

Heidt and Schmidt each scored in the third period for Team Brewer and Connor Bowie responded with a pair of goals for Team Hamhuis.

Monday’s Intrasquad was a feisty affair, as the second period featured several tussles and scrums and in the third period, there was a scrap between Fischer O’Brien and Caden Brown.

Both goaltenders were sharp on Monday, as Ty Young got the win for Team Brewer.

According to General Manager & Head Coach Mark Lamb, he hopes to have the team dwindled down from its 39 players from the intrasquad game to 23-26 players by the end of the week.

The Cougars now prepare for their pre-season schedule, which will get underway on Friday when the Cougars visit Kamloops to take on the Blazers.
