BCAFN calling on federal leaders to better raise Indigenous issues
PRINCE GEORGE – The BC Assembly of First Nations is calling on all Federal Leaders to make more of an effort to raise Indigenous issues during the election campaign.
Over 200 First Nations leaders are meeting this week for the annual BCAFN general meeting online. According to a news release from BCAFN, the Conservative, Liberal, and NDP leaders were invited to deliver a short video message. As of Wednesday, only NDP leader Jagmeet Singh agreed to participate in the zoom meeting.
“During the current federal election, I expected more from Trudeau, O’Toole, and Singh. They have all paid a great deal of lip service to Indigenous issues, but are unwilling to actually appear before the leadership of First Nations in BC. If they can’t spend ten minutes addressing these issues during the election, what kind of attention will they pay to reconciliation once they are elected,” said BCAFN Regional Chief Terry Teegee in a statement.
