Helicopter accident in Nunavut claims life of man working for Prince George drilling company

NUNAVUT — Geotech Drilling Services Ltd. in Prince George has confirmed one of its employees was killed in a helicopter accident in northwestern Nunavut.

RCMP confirm it happened on Tuesday near the Hope Bay mine.

Police say that a helicopter rolled on landing and killed one male employee on the ground.

“No other injuries have been reported,” reads an RCMP news release. “The investigation into the incident is ongoing in conjunction with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Office of the Chief Coroner.”

Mine owner Agnico Eagle Mines Limited released a statement which reads in part:

“On behalf of Agnico Eagle, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the individual’s family, friends and colleagues. Operations at the Hope Bay project have been temporarily suspended for approximately 24 hours. Agnico Eagle will work with the contractor to ensure all the necessary support and assistance will be provided to the individual’s family during this difficult time.”

In a Facebook post, Geotech Drilling Services Ltd. also extended its condolences, noting details for supporting his family will be provided in the coming days.

The deceased’s name has not been released.
