BC releases COVID-19 school exposure reporting system, critics call it “tone deaf”

PRINCE GEORGE – The province has released details on how potential COVID-19 school exposures will be reported.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, BC’s Provincial Health Officer announced the system on Tuesday after parent groups, and critics called on health officials to have an authoritative source for potential exposure notifications.

Dr. Henry revealed essentially the same system that was used last year which will see potential exposure notifications posted on health authority websites.

The increased measures come as health officials released new data Tuesday showing the drastic increase in COVID-19 cases among kids aged 11 and under in BC.

Education critic Jackie Tegart called the announcement tone-deaf, saying the system in place now, is a great disappointment to her and other parents who expected more.

The BC Parent Advisory Council, BCTF, and education critic have all called for stronger measures since the beginning of September.

Measures those groups were calling for included mandatory face masks for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 3, bringing back the cohort system, and more.

None of these measures were put into place on Tuesday.

What will be reported is only the potential COVID-19 exposures at schools in BC, which will eventually be updated onto the Northern Health website.
