PRINCE GEORGE – It was a whirlwind visit, but the committee pulled together to get comments in the upcoming provincial budget was in town and met with ten different organizations, including the local Chamber and the YMCA.

“We’re travelling around the province, hearing presentations,” explains Janet Routledge, Chair of the Select Committee on Finance. “By the time we’re finished on Thursday, we will have heard 350 presentations.” That’s 100 more presentations than in the past.

One of the presenters was Amanda Alexander, the CEO of the Family YMCA of Northern BC.

“So we’re asking for government and the education system to work collaboratively to develop a solution [to the shortage of child care workers]. Specifically, we’d like to see apprenticeship programs similar to what the trades do.”

She says by the time an early childhood worker completes their education, they are $20,000 in the hole, whereas apprenticeships in the trades is generally paid for.

“Our second ask was for funding for the Y Mind program. This is something we’ve delivered in numerous urban and rural communities across the province.”

The Committee has until mid-November to crunch all the data and bring a report back to the government prior to the budget, which is typically delivered in February.
