PRINCE GEORGE—After a two year hiatus due to COVID-19, United Way of Northern BC and volunteers from Kelson Group came together to give back for their Day of Caring. The group helped bring much-needed renovations for a home owned by Phoenix Transition Society.

The groups are helping re-build a patio using composite wood that last decades. Railings and staircase access to the garden is also being installed.

The home belongs to Phoenix Transition Society, which helps women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse.

“The mom’s and the kids, and the facilitators will be able to use the deck. It’ll be safe, they’ll be able to get on the garden and back into the building safely. There’ll be railings around the sides, people can sit on the deck and they’re not going to get splinters or anything,” said Michele Brooke, Resource Development Officer, United Way of Northern BC.

United Way and Kelson Group have teamed up in the past to work on homes, and although they’ve spent time apart, they’re making great progress.

“Originally we thought it was a two day project, but we’ve been told it’ll get done in a day,” said Brooke.

The entire job costs more than $3,000 but thanks to volunteers, families can happily enjoy their new patio.

Next year, United Way is planning on doing gardening work for the transition house.
