Fox eager to join ‘world-class organization’ in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – Ahead of their home opener, the Spruce Kings have been active on the trade market this week. And with that, the latest member of the team has already been on the ice after being traded from Cranbrook on Tuesday.

Nathan Fox was traded in exchange for future considerations after the team opened up a forward spot after Corey Cunningham was sent down to the Trail Smoke Eaters.

“It’s super exciting,” admitted the 19-year-old. “Obviously, you guys have a really good program up here making a pretty deep run there, winning the Fred (Page) Cup and all that stuff a couple of years ago which was pretty exciting. I’m really excited to be a part of a world-class organization up here in Prince George.”

Fox, a product of Okotoks, Alberta, is well travelled, having spent time all across Canada during his childhood.

“I originally started playing when I was four years old. Actually, I moved out to the East Coast, lived in New Brunswick for about seven years and played most of my minor hockey there and then moved back to Alberta. I played Midget Triple-A there and ended up finding a roster spot in Cranbrook, and now I’m here.”

Playing for the expansion Cranbrook Bucks, the 19-year-old took pride in being a member of the inaugural roster as they competed in the Penticton Pod earlier this year.

“It was pretty cool to be a part of an expansion franchise, really laying that foundation for what the organization will come to be. That was definitely a cool opportunity. The Pod Season, we were super fortunate to get that many games in. I know a lot of places that were not so fortunate, so I was really excited and really happy to get those games in between April and May. It was a little weird, But we’ll take it.”

Fox appeared in 15 games with the Bucks, scoring two goals and three assists. With Thursday marking Day 2 on the ice with his new team, he believes he’s adjusting and fitting in well.

“I think I’m just getting into the swing of things a little bit more now. Getting used to the routine, the coaches, and the boys. I think I’m settling in fine. I’ll get my feet wet tomorrow when we play Merritt. I’m really excited for that and we’ll go from there. I think it’s only up from here.”

When fans file into the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena Friday for what will be the Spruce Kings home opener this season, Fox will look to have his speed catch the eyes of the fans as he and his new team, new city, and new fans, take on the Merritt Centennials.
