PRINCE GEORGE – It was a slow start for the Cougars, but at the end of their Saturday tilt against the Victoria Royals, Prince George had enough bounces go their way to come away with their first win of the season following a 3-1 game.

Heading into Saturday’s tilt, both the Cougars and Royals were looking to bring an end to their three-game losing streaks. And for Victoria, they were looking to overcome entering the game shorthanded with seven players being scratched from the roster due to injuries.

In the opening period, both teams managed to fight off two-man advantages after a series of penalties were handed out ahead of the midway mark of the frame.

The period wasn’t much more than that as 18 total penalty minutes were handed out when the first 20 minutes reached its conclusion. Victoria led the way with five penalties while Prince George had four of their own.

With just five shots from the Cougars, just one came on the powerplay despite having five opportunities with the man advantage.

In the 2nd period, a miscue by the Cougars near the blue line of their attacking end resulted in an odd-man rush for the Royals the other way. Tanner Scott ended up rifling the puck just below the crossbar and off the back post to put the Royals on the board first.

The goal came at 6:20 into the middle period.

14:09 of the period, Captain Hook had something to say about it. Cougars’ Jonny Hooker came into the attacking zone as part of their own odd-man rush and let a rifle off of his own, beating Tyler Palmer blocker side to get the scoreboard knotted up.

Hooker has now scored a goal in each of the Cougars’ four games as he now has four on the young season.

At the end of 40, the latter 20 proved to be far more exciting offensively. An uptick in shots got those 1,828 spectators in attendance engaged as the Royals and Cougars nearly doubled their overall shot output from the opening period. At the 2nd intermission, Victoria led the shots department 15-14.

In the 3rd period, the Cougars put the pressure on as much of the offensive opportunities came off their sticks. At 15:52, Riley Heidt gave the Cougars what they needed. Off a shot from Viliam Kmec, Heidt was on the doorstep to tap in the rebound off the pad of Palmer to give Prince George a 2-1 lead.

The period was without a doubt Prince George’s strongest of the night, outshooting the Royals 17-9 in the final frame.

With time running out, Fischer O’Brien scored an empty-netter to seal the win for Prince George as they found their first win of the season.

Taylor Gauthier stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced from the Royals. In total, the Cougars put 31 shots on Tyler Palmer with the Royals’ netminder stopping 29.

The Cougars and Royals will be back in action again Sunday for an afternoon tilt at the CN Centre. The game is scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
