Physical Therapy red hot at UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE – Last fall, UBC launched its inaugural master of Physical Therapy – North program in Prince George to help inspire more graduates to stay and practice in northern, rural, and remote communities across BC, as well as to increase access to physical therapy services for patients.

“The physical therapy community in the North have been asking for this program for years and it’s really a credit to them and their persistence in asking for programs that we have this,” explains Dr. Paul Winwood, Associate Vice President, Medical Sciences at UNBC.

Manav Sandhu is one of twenty students enrolled in the program. He is born and raised in Prince George. He and one classmate are from Prince George. But the majority of his classmates are from rural communities.

“We have some people from Terrace, Smithers, Fort St. John, Vanderhoof, Quesnel,” explains Sandhu. “And then you have people from rural communities in the Interior, like Lillooet or Powell River or Christina Lake.”

The program was created last fall and, like all medical programs under the umbrella the Northern Medical Program, it was built around the premise of “train in the North, stay in the North.” And, while physical therapy was a long time in the making for UBC and UNBC, there is another of the rehab programs on the way.
