PRINCE GEORGE – When the UNBC Timberwolves Men’s Basketball squad tipped off against the Vancouver Island University Mariners last weekend at the Northern Sports Centre there were plenty of Prince George connections on both sides of the court.

For VIU, a trio of Duchess Park Secondary alumni made a return back to the city where it all started for them.

Jackson Kuc, Caleb Lyons, and Dan Zimmerman were all more than excited to be home, and to be in the building playing against a team they all grew up watching.

“It’s pretty cool, it’s pretty awesome, we played here for city finals and stuff like that in this gym, but to be playing university ball now here against UNBC is pretty cool,” said Kuc.

For Kuc and Lyons, parents, grandparents, and friends filled the stands at NSC for a game the boys called surreal.

“Oh it’s super exciting to be back,” said Lyons. “You make so many connections growing up here, and it’s nice seeing some of the players and coaches..it’s just a good atmosphere here.”

Unfortunately following a foot injury, and a recent surgery Zimmerman never got to suit up for the games against the Timberwolves, although he made sure to make his return back to BC’s Northern Capital the best it could be.

“Oh I was definitely enjoying the home-cooked meals and sleeping at home,” said Zimmerman.

The PG trio not only went to the same high school together here in the city, but also attended the same elementary school as well.

Lyons is a Northern Bounce alum, and Canadian Sport School alum just beginning his post-secondary career in his first season.

Kuc is entering his second season with VIU although last season didn’t boast much gameplay.

Zimmerman enters his third season with the Mariners, having played 16 games for VIU prior to the pandemic putting an end to the 2019-20 campaign.

VIU won the CCAA nationals back in 2019 and are still the reigning champions.
