Liberal leadership candidate promises renewal during a visit to Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — A candidate vying for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party made a pit stop in Prince George today as part of his northern tour.

Val Litwin is one of six candidates looking to steer the party back to the government. His tour has taken him all over the north, including Kitimat, Prince Rupert, Terrace and Quesnel.

Litwin is perhaps best known for his previous role as CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce where he says he was in charge of the biggest business network in B.C.

So, what message is he trying to spread to party members?

“I’m talking to people at the grassroots level about what it’s going to take us to win in 2024 but also what kind of a party do we need to build in the meantime.”

He says that needs to include party renewal.

“Look, this is an incredible party with a proud history but it’s time for us to download a new operating system. And a big part of that for me is sending a signal to people with zero distortion that we are an inclusive and welcoming partly to everyone. LGBTQ2+ communities, women, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, what your beliefs are, we need you in this party and I actually think that will be a big part of our strength moving forward.”

While in northern B.C., he says he’s heard a lot about fibre connectivity, revenue sharing and affordability.

“The Lower Mainland and parts of the Interior are just so unaffordable now for people, the next generation. Sixty-one percent of the population is now under 40 and they’re looking beyond the urban jurisdictions, they’re looking to the north, they’re looking to the Interior and my vision for the future of B.C. is a new deal for the north where we’re investing in communities and amenities that anchor people in communities.”

The other candidates running for leadership of the party are Michael Lee, Gavin Dew, Kevin Falcon, Ellis Ross and Renee Merrifield.

The party will choose its next leader on February 5, 2022.
