PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars signed 2004-born forward Gavin Schmidt to a Western Hockey League (WHL) Standard Player Agreement.

Schmidt, 17, is currently playing for the Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers AAA in the Alberta Elite Hockey League. The 5-11 160 lbs forward is tied for first in team scoring with seven points (one goal and six assists) in 11 games. Schmidt was drafted by the Cougars in 10th round, 202nd overall, in the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft.

“Gavin has had a terrific start to his season in Okotoks and has taken on a leadership role on his Under-18 team. He is a strong competitor and is a player you can play in multiple roles. He is a great addition to our depth upfront,” Cougars Director of Scouting Bob Simmonds said.

Schmidt has been called up on an emergency basis and is set to make his WHL debut tonight (Nov. 13) against the Kelowna Rockets. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. from the CN Centre.
