PRINCE GEORGE- A black bear cub has moved into it’s new home at the Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers after being rescued in Prince George. On Thursday, the Conservation Office reported the bear to the shelter after it was located near the Save-On-Foods parking lot off Birchwood Drive. The orphaned cub was severely underweight at 22 lb, and was in no condition to hibernate.

Angelika Langen, Founder of NLWS says incidences like this aren’t uncommon, and they raise awareness for another issue that needs to be addressed in Northern BC.

“Too many adult bears lose their lives do to human attractants, leaving cubs behind that can’t yet fend for themselves. We as a society have to do better and give these cubs a chance to stay with their mom,” she stated.

Bear sighting reports to the Conservation Officer Service have been increasing in Prince George over the past couple of years. September 2021 saw over double the amount of reports made in September 2019.

Langen says she’s grateful the cub gets a second chance at life, but taking steps to reduce human bear conflicts in the North is extremely important. She says the shelter has some new ideas how this can be done, and the they’re hoping to introduce those plans in the new year.

The cub is now loving the room service provided by Northern Lights, and the shelter is hoping to release it in June. This is the time when the bear would naturally leave it’s mother.
